THOUGHTS ON THE INAUGURATION by Fiona Goodwin

It was a close call
January 20 21
Kicking and screaming America was lead
To a peace of sorts.
We wrestled with dark forces
The fake, the false, the mildly untrue
On any given day who knew
if they were lies
When friends with letters after their name and good hearts
Proclaimed there was a plot.
Sometimes what is clear to me is not to you
This being human
Brings us to our knees
And so it should
King George the sixth
To a Britain waning in battle, said:
And I said to the man who stood at the gate of the year:
Give me a light that I may tread safely into the unknown.
And he replied:
“Go out into the darkness and put your hand into the Hand of God.  That shall be to you better than light and safer than a known way.”
I pray today for me and you
That you will find that hand
That You will know what’s true
That courage will rise up
At the fork in the road.
And you may even look back and say
That was a close call.
