TO TRISH by Beth Haist

For my one relationship I thought was going to last forever…but didn’t. Just friends now.

She cooks with cinnamon and ginger root
Wrapping walnuts into thin filaments
I watch my woman mesmerized and mute
As she practices origami feats

Paper-thin slices of water chestnut
Carefully arranged edible art
Feeding my hedonistic kingly gut
Brushing sugared lips from berry tarts

This day sated, satisfied, assures me
Her love, her hand coaxes a sandy loam
Into a nice black, rich fecundity
Palm-leafed philodendrons, rainforest home

Her hands, her touch bring operas of light
My heart, my love sings full and bright–
A light has come into my life
