The David By Fiona Goodwin

Michelangelo‘s David
The one that slew goliath
Started life buried in a block of marble
That had been abandoned
In a quarry
A leftover from another project.
‘Mike’ as we shall call him
Said he didn’t sculpt the David
He simply chipped away until he found him
It took two years.
‘David’ he says, ‘had always been there.
He just had to be unearthed or un marbled’ (my words not his)
You know what I’m going to say
You and I –
A most exquisite piece of art
Abandoned, left over from another project
Nevertheless,
When we put ourselves
In the hands of the Great Sculptor Spirit
Things get chipped away
What was hidden is revealed
And then we are polished
And then maybe happy tourists
Come to admire our beauty.
