NOT RACIST? by Fiona Goodwin

Before I came out, my straight friends Who knew they were not homophobic and had nothing against homosexuals used to jokingly call people ‘gay ’ just because there was something about them that was odd or they didn’t like.

When I came out I could see I made them uncomfortable and they found it harder to use these familiar words …I wanted to put them at ease…Felt bad for their discomfort – It was my fault for being gay.

Trying out the local church recently I asked if they had anything against homosexuals… No they didn’t… ‘God loves everyone’ they said. ‘Do you think they are sick and need prayer?’ I asked. ‘Yes’ they replied.

The people at that church Have a belief that there is something wrong with me. That’s why I don’t want to spend any time there…

They believe they are loving and kind people and in many ways they are… and that is what makes me question ration my belief that I am not racist…
