MY CHILD by Susan Byrnes

My voice screams
In my songs
Sometimes it belongs
My fear is woven to my bones
Sometimes it won’t leave
Me alone
My voice is subdued and small
I can’t hear it at all
A little girl who won’t cry
Hidden down a dark well
She wants everyone to see her
But if you look too long
She will run
She knows not what to do
She looks for a way
The child pulses
In secrecy
She will not say
Don’t ask her what it is
She will run away
My child I will protect you
You can come out and play
I will feed you
And love you
For I am you today
