Limerence by Fiona Goodwin

(Definition: Limerence is a state of mind which results from romantic or non-romantic feelings for another person and typically includes obsessive thoughts and fantasies as well as a desire to form or maintain a relationship with the object of love and to have one’s feelings reciprocated.)
When the love bug hits
It’s a car crash,
We drag ourselves
As best we can to the side of the road
And back to reality
“She loves me she loves me not she loves me she loves me not”
And if when we were small
We hit our heads against a brick wall
With broken mothers
Incapable of responding to our needs
(Because of course their own were left untended,)
We drive around the track like a hamster in a wheel
Addicted to hopefulness
Never truly raising our expectation
Above the level of unrequited love.
Harsh words, I know,
But sobriety is hard won
And checking in with Goldilocks
Every time we race ahead,
It’s a good way to stay on track
On the way to something real,
Someone real.
