JANUARY 16,1998 by KATHI AKER

We took my sister home today
her husband and I.
We took her home
bone bits and ashes
in a brown box
and a blue velvet bag
I carried her on my lap
my arms around
the blue velvet bag
the brown box
and I imagined
As I held her
that I warmed
the bone bits and ashes
that are all that’s left
on this earth
of my sister
I carried my sister home
today
to her mountains
to her dogs
to her husband.
He took her into their house
and there she’ll rest
at home
at last.
