In Court Today by Fiona Goodwin

The judgement today was pivotal
I wanted sea and sand and fish n chips with tartar sauce
The prosecutor as ever,
Was quick to her feet:
“Objection my Lord!
It’s a forty minute drive!
Ten dollar parking!
Not on the diet!
And so sad and so selfish to go alone!
The defence at first was wobbly
“Hearsay m’Lord!
Sadder not to go,
More selfish to cheat herself of seeking joy
By validating her existence through the happiness of others
And m’Lord, she’s sixty four
She came to California alone
And are you saying she can’t go to the effing beach?
“Objection m’Lord: anger and foul language!”
“Objection overruled,” said the judge,
“Her anger is justified,
Case closed.”
