A CHRISTMAS JOKE by Carrie Pemberton-Ford

Knock knock
Who’s there?
I raise my eyes
From the glare
Of cathode rays
Morecambe and Wise
In Black and White.

Knock, knock, knock
Insistent ground bass
Knock and a soprano voice!
My mother’s
Faltering Fsharp
Sounds out
My father’s name

Im up, green tissue crown
Abandoned, tinsel tangled
Sandals trip me
childhood slips, I fall
Into the entrance hall
To see my mother’s body
Is the knocker!
