I LOOK AT MYSELF by Susan Byrnes

I look at myself
And see your face
And think to myself
We are in the place
We don’t look the same and you have
Fine clothes
But I see in your eyes
You know what I know
In parts of Africa
When you reach your death
They say you have met your fate
But in this land of mine
I don’t know how far
I have to go
Please say you see me standing
Here on the street
Say you recognize me
By the look in my eyes
I’m carrying bags so heavy
They cut my hands
I have so much to carry
I wonder if I need it all
So I throw them to the side
And watch with glee
As they scatter and fall
Far away from me
