I didn’t mean to By Fiona Goodwin

I didn’t mean to
I didn’t mean to
Be someone I wasn’t.
I meant to be me.
I plan to be me every day
But sometimes you get this watered down version A massaged expression
Of yuk!
I’m going to say the word
That overused trending wornout word,
Authenticity

Somehow, from very young,
I was a crusader in
A quest for truth
Which of course meant impersonating someone else for 40 years.
It was a lot of work
In the mirror
Do I look gay?
do I look straight?
Should I stay away
From that woman who seems so lovely.
You would think I would’ve gotten over it by now
But I haven’t
I can’t forget the men I didn’t want to sleep with but did
The women I wanted to sleep with but didnt.
I didn’t mean to
I didn’t mean to be someone I wasn’t.
