COCONUT SPRINKLED ON THE WATERMELON by Fiona Goodwin

I was miserable
Till I saw you
Really saw you
Sure, I knew you were there
But finally on the last day
You came into focus

The coconut sprinkled on the watermelon

You had been there all the time
But I was hungry
It was the last meal of the day
I wanted something different
Steak and chips perhaps
Frankly I despised you.

And then it happened
After days of glaring at you
A damn burst inside
Tears washed down my face
And plopped heavy on to the freshly sprinkled coconut.

Gratitude had come to me at last
I didn’t deserve it
I didn’t know it was
What I most needed.

But suddenly there you were
The answer to a prayer
I had never prayed
I bowed my head
I wept deeply and said
‘I am blessed
So blessed to have
Freshly sprinkled coconut on my watermelon.
